Liam Rice
Liam Rice was a volunteer in the Irish Republican Army (IRA) who was killed, officially "shot while resisting arrest", by the Garda Siochána (police) at Dublin in the early 1940s. At the time, the IRA was actively collaborating with Nazi Germany and was the target of an intensive campaign by the Special Branch Division of the Garda Síochána (nicknamed the Broy Harriers for their commander Ned Broy). Rice's death, as well the killing in similar circumstances of Charlie McGlade, were blamed by the IRA on Special Branch Sergeant Dennis O'Brien, himself a former long-time IRA member turned police detective. It was cited at the time by the IRA (and continuous to be cited up to the present by radical Irish Nationalists ) as a justification for the 1942 killing of O'Brien by IRA Chief-of-Staff Charlie Kerins, for which Kerins was executed in 1944.
